Androgogic hosting fair use policy

Androgogic hosting fair use policy

For many Androgogic client partners, Androgogic's hosting services do not include set limits on bandwidth and/or data storage space and/or streaming media and/or reporting loads. Instead, Androgogic operates this Fair Use Policy as follows:

Fair use of bandwidth and data storage

Client-partner use of bandwidth and disk storage is unlimited if:

  • Use is integral to use of the hosted service, i.e. you are using it as it was intended to be used. For example for a Learning Management System (LMS), it is being used for learning and not some other purpose
  • Use does not include excessive bandwidth or data storage. We define “excessive” as 'well above the average bandwidth and/or data storage used by other Androgogic client partners using equivalent services. This would include a sudden change from what one site has used over time to a higher level out-of-step with general growth trends for example). Another example of this would be where, say, a hospital using their LMS for staff compliance and PD training uses more than 50% more bandwidth and/or storage than used on average by other hospital client partners with similar user numbers.
  • Use impacts Androgogic’s ability to provide other users with hosting services. An example would where, say, an abnormally large amount of data is loaded at one time flooding Androgogic's network entry points.
Fair use of streaming media

With the exception of virtual classroom systems, Androgogic’s hosted services are predominantly designed to provide asynchronous content. Whilst it is possible to load streaming media into the applications and the applications will stream them to users, if a significant amount of streaming media is required, Androgogic requests that our client partners use a dedicated streaming service such as YouTube or Vimeo which are specifically designed to serve this kind of content.

This Fair Use Policy requires our client partners to follow this request if any significant streaming media needs to be used.

Fair use of reporting

Androgogic Totara LMS includes a powerful report builder tool wherein an administrator can design, build and publish reports. As an administrator can effectively create any report including one for all users for all courses for all time. For this reason, reports can be made that will have a negative impact on the LMS server cluster. If very large reports need to be run, there is a caching setting available and reports can be set to require a user to set filters before running. If these options are not followed, this Fair Use Policy requires our client partners to invest in additional reporting capacity in the form of a reporting server or LRS with reporting capability that cannot impact the production performance of the LMS.

HTML and frontend coding

Androgogic applications allow users to load content. In some case this can include HTML, CSS and Javascript. Where this is allowed, this Fair Use Policy requires our client partners to respect the security considerations that we apply to all our sites. We also require that no scripts be loaded that will interfere with the performance of the site or otherwise consume resources that are beyond a fair use of the site as it was intended to be used.

Why do Androgogic apply a Fair Use policy?

Androgogic apply this Fair Use Policy because bandwidth, storage and related costs can be fairly managed for both Androgogic and our client-partners. Many of Androgogic's client partners either do not have the ability to budget for scaling costs of this type and/or cannot ascertain what levels of use they will need. By applying a Fair Use policy, Androgogic client partners can be confident that there will be sufficient bandwidth and storage available to them to use the hosted service as it was intended and Androgogic can be confident that pricing for services remains fair for all parties.
